The Night Agent Season 2: What It's About, Possible Release Date, and More

The Netflix hit is moving to a new part of the world

Everyone and their dad is watching The Night Agent. The action thriller is a bona fide hit for Netflix — after its release in March, the show only took a few weeks to become one of the streamer's most-watched new series ever, dominating the Top 10 lists both domestically and globally. That's no conspiracy; it's just good, fun TV.

Shawn Ryan (The Shield) brought the show to life, adapting Matthew Quirk's book The Night Agent into a 10-episode series about Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), a lowly FBI grunt who mans a nighttime hotline for agents. When the line finally rings after a cybersecurity engineer named Rose (Luciane Buchanan) calls in reporting that her aunt and uncle were attacked, Sutherland follows the clues to unravel a vast conspiracy involving a mole in the highest ranks of the White House.

There isn't much news about Season 2 available, but that doesn't mean we can't start asking questions about a release date, what the new season will be about, and more.

The Night Agent Season 2 latest news

More details about Season 2 have surfaced, courtesy of showrunner Shawn Ryan, who told Comicbook.com in mid-April that Season 2 won't take place in Washington, D.C., where Season 1 was set. Ryan also clarified that The Night Agent will unfold with new self-contained stories and different characters — aside from main character Peter Sutherland — each season. More details are in the "What will The Night Agent Season 2 be about?" section.

The Night Agent Season 2 renewal

Mission accomplished! On March 29, less than a week after it premiered on Netflix, The Night Agent was renewed for Season 2. And it wasn't a tough decision. Since Netflix began releasing Top 10 data, the series is one of the streamer's most popular English-language shows, clocking the third-best opening week for a new Netflix series, behind only Wednesday and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The Night Agent Season 2 estimated release date

There's no information yet on when Season 2 will be released. In early April 2023, showrunner Shawn Ryan told TV Line that he was only in the idea phase of Season 2, and factoring in the writers strike, that means it could be a while before the next season is ready to hit our screens.

What will The Night Agent Season 2 be about?

Season 1 followed Matthew Quirk's book of the same name, but Quirk never wrote a second book detailing the further adventures of Peter Sutherland. That means Season 2 of The Night Agent will almost certainly be entirely original. (Quirk is a producer on the show, so he could use ideas he had for a second book, if he had any.)

"[Matthew Quirk has] written plenty of books, but nothing with these characters in this world," Ryan told TV Line in early April. "So it's something that with the pickup we're now working on."

"I would say that [Sutherland's first mission as a Night Agent] will be the starting-off point, to sort of see what he was being sent off to do," Ryan said, referring to where we last saw Sutherland in the Season 1 finale. "But we have some surprises. I don't want to say too much, because until you're actually filming it, the stories can always change."

Ryan also spoke to Comicbook.com in mid-April about Season 2, revealing that it won't be set in Washington, D.C., where Season 1 was set, and that Sutherland will be on a new adventure with mostly new characters.

"[Season 2] does not take place in the D.C. area, which is where Season 1 took place," Ryan said. "So we'll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in Season 1. And we're determining who from Season 1 might appear in Season 2. But essentially we're going to be telling a whole brand new story, which is exciting and scary. And with the high bar that Season 1 set for audience expectations, we feel that pressure too. And so we're just going to do our best to tell a story that feels within The Night Agent universe, but that feels new, fresh, and exciting."
